Create Your Own Cardboard Portfolio

Supplies:

  • Cardboard
  • Utility knife
  • Duct Tape
  • Hole punch
  • Ribbon, inch wide
  • Self Adhesive Velcro

Directions:

1. Cut two pieces of cardboard that is a few inches larger than the size of the art pieces you would like to store, leaving a few additional inches for the top of the portfolio when making the handle.  I would recommend about three inches. Cut cardboard carefully with knife.

2. Lay the two pieces of cardboard on top of each other on a flat surface.  Use duct tape along the bottom of portfolio.  You can then tape the two sides of portfolio together, leaving the top open, OR you can duct tape the sides individually so the portfolio can be open.

3. You can make handles one of two ways:

Ribbon Handles:

  1. Mark where you will make the holes with a pen that are 1 1/2 inches down from the top edge, creating two holes about five to six inches apart, but centered on upper half cardboard. (See illustration below) Do this on both sides. Use whole puncher to punch holes.

B.

Cut two pieces of ribbon, the same size and to your desired length. (Around 18 inches). Insert end of ribbon through one hole of one side of cardboard and tie knot. Take other end through other hole, and check to make sure it’s at the length you desire before tying second knot. Repeat on other side.

Cardboard Handles:

  1. Make sure that you have ample space to cut out handle on top of portfolio, at least five to six inches.

B.

Measure and draw out handles on cardboard, centered on both pieces.  Using utility knife, cut out handle one on each side of cardboard.  Make sure you cut on a surface that is protected.

C.

If you desire, you can use duct tape around top of handle to make it stronger and more comfortable to carry.

4. Take backing off of self-adhesive Velcro strips and attach one side of the Velcro to each side of cardboard along the top edge of portfolio.  To close top, press the portfolio together at Velcro to ensure the portfolio closes properly.
