She hoped it was true. And she was going to do everything she could to show him what they could have together, if he’d only believe that it was all right to be happy with her. Maybe if she started on that psychology degree, she’d have a better idea how to ease him into a different life.
But she had already learned more about him in the past day than she had in the six previous months when he’d been on guard duty. It had always been a mistake to push him, and it was now true more than ever.
Raising her head, she looked into his eyes. “Tell me you’ll think about it—seriously.”
His Adam’s apple bobbed. “I will.”
But she still saw doubt on his face.
“What?”
“I’m thinking—could I work for a man with your father’s ethics?”
She sighed. “I was thinking about that, too. Dad just had a lesson in the result of the decisions he’s been making for the past few years. He doesn’t need any more money. He needs to start running his life differently.”
“Why would he?”
“To keep the love and respect of his daughter. Can you do the same?”
“You’d tell him that?”
“Yes. And will you—consider running your life differently?”
After a heart-stopping hesitation, he answered, “Okay.”
That one word thrilled her because she knew his integrity was everything to him. If he said a thing, he meant it.
She settled down beside him, closing her eyes as he stroked her arm.
“I guess we’ll have to face the real world soon,” she murmured.
“But not quite yet,” he answered, and she considered it a good sign that he had made the suggestion.
