“Why so surprised my pretty little
goblin?”

“I was only wondering if you’d warned
Jocelyn that the minions would be coming to drag you back to hell
soon. We wouldn’t want you dying on us by depriving you of your
only source of nourishment.”

“And what would that be?”

“Babies blood of course. All incarnates
need it.”

“Don’t worry about it. Bitches usually
give birth by the litter. I’m sure you wouldn’t mind a few less
mouths to feed for the next time you go in heat.”

“Baboon’s ass.”

“Trollop.”

“Useless barbarian.”

“Cocktease.”

They stared at one another. Then Ava
burst into tears and jumped up to throw her arms around his
neck.

“I’m so happy for you.”

Damon looked over her golden upswept
curls and smiled at the shock on Jocelyn’s face. He shrugged and
Ava rose first up and then down with the movement as she continued
to weep loudly against his neck.

“She’s welcoming me to the
family.”

“Yes.” She grinned back at him, joyous.
“I can see that.”

* * * *

They spent the night there on the
island. They would sail out the next day on a passenger ship
heading back to America while Ava and Kristen, a pleasant woman
with a surprising sense of humor, would be going back to England.
She spent the night with Ava with Damon’s assurance that she would
have plenty of nights to celebrate their marriage but few to say
goodbye to her sister.

They stayed up late that night,
giggling beneath the covers like they used to and talking in
subdued whispers when exhaustion began to set in. It hurt her that
she wouldn’t be seeing her sister, but Ava assured her more than
once that Uncle Clay had more than enough money to let the two of
them visit one another as much as and whenever they wanted. Once
Ava told her of her life in England, of all the handsome men vying
for her attention and the parties and clothes, whatever worries
Jocelyn had began to melt away.

She told Ava about her and Damon’s
plans back home. About how they’d decided to move to Virginia so he
could help her run the estate. She was worried, she confided, if
Damon would regret giving up his home and crops for her. It was one
of her worst fears even and she had protested it when Damon had
brought it up after the wedding.

“He’s right though Joss. It’s the
smartest thing to do. You saw his plantation, it’s small but he
runs it well. He’s smart and he can run the estate just as well or
better than daddy.”

“You mean that?”

“Of course. Some new blood will be good
for the old place and I’m sure he can come up with a few ideas to
make the business run smoother. You guys can work off of each
other. It’s the smartest thing to do really.”

Jocelyn knew that. But she was still
afraid.

The next day she stood in front of the
low mirrored desk that graced their cabin as she brushed out her
hair. She’d grown rather fond of the simple braid but it still felt
good to have the pins and heated tongs needed for the more
complicated styles. Damon was behind her, undressing for bed and
she watched him in the mirror before she summoned up the courage to
turn around in her seat and face him.

“Do you really not mind?”

“Mind what?” His voice was curious but
distant as if he were concentrating on other things. Jocelyn bit
her lip.

“Your plantation. Your home. Won’t you
regret leaving them?” She watched him rise from the bed and come to
her. Looking down at her, Damon ran a hand through his hair,
brushing the long strands out of his face in a move that was fast
becoming instinctive. She talked faster as his hands fell atop hers
and pulled her to her feet.

“And what about your crops? What if
something happened to them? Like those weevils you were so worried
about.” His arms encircled her and his forehead rested against
hers. His brows rose.

“How do you know you’ll be happy there
with me? What if--”

He growled and kissed her until her
knees weakened and she was bent over his arm in a limpless heap. He
grinned against her lips and she could feel the world tip as he
pulled them both down onto the bed. She gave a breathless gasp as
he moved her to straddle his hips. His mouth began to travel and
her body shivered under his ministrations.

“Damn the crops, Princess.” His tongue
darted out and her hips thrust forward until he groaned. He grabbed
her face between his hands and gazed up at her. “Damn the
plantation and damn the doubts. Believe me when I say that I have
everything I want and everything I need, right here.”
