In one essay he criticizes Oscar Wilde for making “two common but unjustified assumptions.” The first is that “the world is immensely rich and is suffering chiefly from maldistribution.” In fact, Orwell now declares, the problem “is not how to distribute such wealth as exists but how to increase production without which economic equality merely means common misery.” Wilde's second error, Orwell states, is to overestimate the potential of machines.
