To: Patrice, Jasmine

From: Nicole

We have to have lunch or dinner tomorrow, no exceptions. I need to talk A.S.A.P., Kenneth just left my house.

Nicole – The Trendsetter

I didn’t have any doubt that my friends would come through for me. They always did because that’s how we operated. It felt good knowing that I would see my friends the following day. That means that I would have to cancel on Joshua the following day but he should understand. I hadn’t been spending a lot of time with them and so a meeting was long overdue.

*

He said what?” Jasmine asked in horror.

“His white ass has a lot of nerve,” Patrice added.

Moments like this are exactly why I love the both of my friends so much. They don’t blindly agree with me on everything but when we do agree, we do it in style. I told them the story up until the point in the kitchen. I was nervous about disclosing the details regarding our intimate moment. I know that they would scold me as if they were my parents. So I decided to bask in the glory of our mutual disgust for Kenneth for a moment.

“I know right!” I responded. “I was too through when he said that he wanted to try again with me. He knows the only reason he wants to try again is because I’m screwing his best friend,” I laughed.

“So what happened after that?” Jasmine asked, “Spill the beans girl.”

I took a deep breath and apprehensively told them the rest of the story. I cringed at what I knew was coming next.

Girl, you have to slow your roll with him. Don’t allow him to mess up what you have with Joshua,” Jasmine said, sending her curly hair bouncing as she shook her head and finger at the same time.

“Wait, you said that you didn’t even want me to be with him. Now you don’t want me to mess up with I have?”

“Well considering the alternative, hell yeah,” Jasmine said.

“She’s right girl,” Patrice said after she took a sip of her drink. We were back at our favorite Asian restaurant. “At least Joshua treats you right, and you like him too. Regardless of how we feel about it, you’re getting treated well and that’s more important than anything. I think you and Josh are just right for eachother.”

Again, I was not sure what Patrice meant by her “just right for each other” comment but I am probably reading too much into it.

“So don’t allow Ken’s triflin’ ass to swoop in and fuck up your life again,” Jasmine said, “We don’t want to see you hurt anymore.”

“Being hurt is a part of any relationship,” I responded.  I didn’t know why I was taking up for Kenneth especially since my friends were right about the entire situation. I know that I did the right thing but I couldn’t stop thinking about Kenneth since he left my place. I was a mixture of anger and confusion.

When he was close to me, he felt very familiar. I had forgotten how it felt to be in his presence. When he’s around an intense calm settles over me, and I just know that things are going to be okay. His cocky disposition puts me at ease even though it can be annoying. He walks around as if he has everything handled and he usually does. For a split second I wanted to give in to him and throw caution to the wind.

“You’re both right, I’m going to stay with Joshua and put Kenneth out of my head. He had his chance to be with me and he blew it. I’m happy and I’m looking forward to seeing where my relationship with Josh goes.”

“Good! Let’s make a toast,” Jasmine said as she lifted her sake, “Here’s to new beginnings and to leaving the past in the past.”

“I’ll drink to that,” Patrice and I said at the same time. All of us laughed as we clinked glasses and drank.

My phone had vibrated quite a few times during my dinner and I picked it up to check it. I had several mixed text messages. Two of them were from Joshua and one of them was from Kenneth.

To: Nicole

From: Joshua

Call me when you get this. I’m trying to be okay with you canceling our plans tonight but it’s not sitting well with me.

His text bothered me a little bit but I thought it was cute that he missed me so much. I went on to read the next one.

To: Nicole

From: Joshua

Did you read my text? I hope you’re okay and not mad at me about what I said earlier. I’m sorry, I’m tripping and I just really miss you. Have a great time with “your girls”.

That one made me smile even brighter; he obviously saw that he was acting a little sporadic. I decided that I would call him on my way home and invite him over. He was probably testy because he needed some of my good lovin’.  I then went on to read Kenneth’s text message.

To: Nicole

From: Kenneth

I meant everything that I said to you last night. I miss you. I hope you change your mind.

I looked up at my friends and gave them a fake smile as I poured myself another sake shot and brought the glass to lips.

Joshua was at my apartment by the time that I arrived. He sounded like he was on his way out of the door as soon as I suggested that he come over to my place. I needed to be close to him and relieve some of the tension that had been caused by Kenneth’s text message. His text message was a bit surreal and I didn’t tell my friends that I received a message from him. I could only imagine the things that would come out of their mouths. Jasmine probably would have snatched my phone and texted him something pretty derogatory. Granted, he may have deserved it but I didn’t want to be mean to him.

Even though I made the decision to stay with Joshua, I like that the fact that Kenneth wants me back. It’s been making me feel a lot better. He didn’t appreciate me when he had me and so he deserves to grovel for a bit. I know that it may not be smart to ignore it because it may get worse. He’s not used to having to ask for forgiveness more than once from me. I’m usually putty in his hands, but not this time. Definitely, not this time.

Sitting on my couch next to Joshua is just what the doctor ordered for me tonight. I laid my head on his shoulder and inhaled his woodsy scent. He has become my escape in the short time that we’ve been together. It’s like he’s my vacation from the world and I really love that about him. Not many people can say that they are a living and breathing oasis.

So you were really missing me tonight huh?” I tease as I snuggled into his side.

“Of course I was missing you, can you blame me? I was a little salty when you canceled on me tonight because I was looking forward to seeing you.”

Yeah, I thought that you were about to go off on me,” I grinned.

“I wouldn’t go off on you; I was just letting you know how I felt. I know I was tripping though,” he said as he kissed the top of my head.

“Well I have a theory as to why you were so testy tonight,” I said in a low tone.

“Please share it with me because I’m dying to know.”

“I think you are just horny and the thought of not being able to get any tonight drove you over the edge. You made a great recovery though, so I will have to applaud on that.”

My comment drew out a deep laugh from him. He went silent for a bit and that lead me to think that my theory may have been correct. Luckily for him, I was horny all day. So I was looking forward to messing up my sheets with him tonight.

“You may have a point; I was a little horny when I sent you that text message. All I could think about were those wonderful twin peaks that I wouldn’t get the opportunity to see,” he said as he caressed my breast through my blouse.

“Well, you’re here now and I’m just as horny as you are. But first I want to help relieve some of that tension that you’ve been building up,” I said as I unzipped his pants.

“Don’t allow me to stop you, because I have a hunch that I’m going to love where this is going.”

I pulled his dick from his pants and smiled at its pulsating length before I swirled my tongue around the tip and took him deep into my mouth. His leaned his head back as his hand explored the sensitive folds under my skirt and inside of my panties. My body began to vibrate underneath his touch and I widened my legs to give him better access.

His finger inside of me mimicked the movements of my mouth as I took him in and out. Each time I swirled my tongue around his head he removed his finger and rubbed my clit. When I took him deep into my mouth he plunged his fingers inside of my warmth. I began to do to him, what I needed him to do to me. I had plans to draw our experience out but I couldn’t stop. The urge to cum was too great and his hands were working wonders.

We both came on my couch. He released inside of my mouth and I came all over his two fingers that were deep inside of me. Sex doesn’t have to be a full on production if you know how to do it correctly.

To the shower?” I asked.

“After you babe,” he said as he pulled his fingers from inside of me.

#Chapter5

Hi pot, it’s me kettle”

Amelia

I love it when I have the opportunity to be at events with my friends.

Sometimes our schedules just don’t allow us to be that fortunate. Everything is a lot more entertaining when they’re in attendance.  Patrice loves networking events because everyone is a potential client for her. She’s a popular personal stylist and people take her word as law.

One scowl from her will make a designer change the direction of their entire collection. She has a wonderful personality when you get to know her but she’s known for being an opinionated hard ass. I’m just happy that I’m her friend because being on her bad side isn’t a place where anyone wants to be. When Amelia slept with Jasmine’s man, it was Patrice that pretty much had her blackballed from our fashion community.

Amelia is still a successful fashion writer but it took her a while to work her way back into the good graces of designers and publications. No one wanted to cross Patrice and they only worked with her because it seemed that Patrice no longer cared about Amelia any more. Usually I’m the peace maker but I couldn’t advocate for Amelia when she’d betrayed our trust the way that she did. I felt a lot better about my decision to not take up for her when she began to date Kenneth.

Some people may think that she dated Kenneth because of how we treated her. I believe that she did it because she’s a whore. She was probably flirting with him the entire time that we were together. I can’t expect a woman like her to adhere to the girl code.

Don’t freak out but Kenneth is here,” Jasmine whispered into my ear.

My hands began to shake as I reached for a glass of champagne. I don’t know why he had the ability to make me nervous even though I turned him down. He should be the one shaking every time he comes into a room that I’m in. I straighten up my spine and prepare to see him and Amelia together. I tell myself that I’m not going to flee the way that I did last time. On this night, I had my friends with me and they are all that I needed.

“Thanks for letting me know girl, the last thing I needed to be was surprised by him and that bitch,” I said.

“He’s alone,” Patrice said, “She’s not with him.”

“I think he’s coming over here,” Jasmine whispered.

Damn, what in the hell does he want with me? He usually ignores me in public these days and now he’s coming over to speak to me. I wasn’t in the mood for his bullshit, especially when everyone was staring at us. I could feel everyone’s prying eyes on us both, and I know that they were hoping for a public spectacle. I’m way too classy for something like that and honestly, he is too.

I finally got up the courage to look up from the food spread, when I turned around he was directly in front of me.

Hey Nicole,” he said with a grin, “Hello ladies,” he acknowledged both of my friends.

“Hi Ken,” they both said in unison.

Really? They both sound like star struck teenagers. I know that Ken was pretty fly for a white guy but he was not Brad Pitt! There was no way that I could expect proper back up from both of my friends when they were obviously underneath his spell, unlike me. Even Patrice had a little twinkle in her eye. What a duo of traitors. I gave the both of them the evil side eye before I spoke.

“Hello Kenneth,” I said through clenched teeth.

“Aww, you don’t look happy to see me, you’re breaking my heart,” he said as he placed his hand over his heart faking a heart attack.

“Well can you blame me? I never know what to expect when it comes to you. You’re full of surprises.”

“Ladies, would you mind excusing me and Nicole for a minute?” He asked the both of them with his million dollar smile.

“Of course,” Jasmine said, “We have to go mix and mingle anyway.”

“We definitely do. I have to go tell a group of women that they are in dire need of my services,” Patrice added in as they walked away.

I cut my eyes at Patrice and she mouthed, “I’m sorry girl,” to me.

She wasn’t as sorry as she was going to be. He played the both of them like a fiddle and it irritated me. Kenneth always seemed to have people wrapped around his finger; it’s a part of his charm. There is just something about him that makes you want to ensure he’s satisfied. Good thing he does not have that effect on me, not anymore anyway.

“Now that you have gotten rid of my friends, what do you want?”

“I just wanted to speak to you without them being around. What are you doing tomorrow night? I want to see you.”

“I have a date with Joshua tomorrow; he’s taking me to play pool if you must know. I already told you that I’m not interested and that I’m moving forward with Josh. We don’t exist any more and it’s time that you realized that.”

He gave me a look that I couldn’t exactly pinpoint but it seemed like I’d hurt him. He quickly recovered and I was disappointed that his true feelings were hidden again underneath his cool resolve. He was always sexier to me when he was vulnerable. Other people saw the alpha male all the time but I got the opportunity to see what was underneath all of that. I’m sure that’s why he pushed me away all the time.

Whenever we would get too close for his personal comfort, he would do something that would upset me. He would flirt with other women, probably sleep with them, or tell me that he needed space. One thing that made me feel special was that he always came back to me and made me feel like his number one. I would push aside my hurt and happily embrace him but I couldn’t bring myself to do it this time. I could no longer be his sanctuary. It doesn’t matter why he hurt me, it only matters that he did.

“Well, I had to try again,” he said as I started to walk away. “Oh, and it would be nice if you answered my text messages when I send them. I’ve never taken you to be a rude woman.”

I turned around, “The only one being rude is YOU. Enjoy your night.”

*

The next afternoon, I went to
Café Sunflower
in Buckhead. It’s one of my favorite places to go for lunch. I was there early and one of my clients would be there in a half hour. I decided to treat myself to desert first. Their vegan chocolate raspberry mousse cake was heavenly and my mouth began to water when the waitress walked away to grab me a piece. This cake is worth putting weight on for, believe me!

I sat facing the door so that I could see my client as she walked in. The waitress brought me my slice of cake and I couldn’t wait to delve in. Just as I brought the first bite to my lips Amelia walked through the door.  I didn’t feel like being bothered with her today and she’s not the type of woman that will just do the polite thing and ignore you.  Once she spotted me she made a beeline for my table and she took a seat.

“Hey Nikki, long time no see,” she smiled.

“Hi Amelia,” I said in a clipped tone.

“Eating all alone?”

“I’m waiting on a client, what do you want?”

“It’s been a while since we talked and I haven’t seen you since you stormed out of that event. I’m sorry that you had to find out about me and Kenneth that way. I told him to tell you but you already know how he is,” she laughed.

I stared at her in disbelief. Not only was she fucking my ex but she was sitting in my face and bragging to me about it.

He’s definitely head strong, and he does what he wants without regard for anybody’s feelings.

He sounds a lot like another person that I know,” I said as I stared at her blankly, but in my mind I had already stabbed her with my fork twice.

I didn’t think that you would care if I dated him. It’s been over a year since the two of you have been together. I figured that you would be over him.”

“So you decided that being under my ex was a good idea?”

“Don’t be so crass Nikki, I would expect more from you.”

“Are you serious right now? You are sleeping with my ex and you want me to be civil towards you? I thought that you were better than that. I didn’t think that you would do something like this again, especially after what happened with you and Jasmine.”

“You don’t know anything about what happened with that situation, so you need to just mind your own business. I genuinely liked him and didn’t want things to happen that way,” she said as her voice cracked.

I had finally gotten under her skin. No woman wants to be labeled as whore. I thought that I should let her know about Kenneth’s texts to me just to wipe the smugness off of her face. She would just die if she knew that he didn’t really care about her. She was the kind of woman that needed to be the centre of a man’s world, even when he doesn’t belong to her.

I used to feel sorry for her because of the environment that she grew up in. She was raised by her grandmother, her father was non-existent, and her mom was strung out somewhere. It had to really suck to grow up the way that she did. The hurt and pain that she must have felt growing up had to have a huge impact on the woman that she was now. Growing up without the love of her parents could have caused her to seek it elsewhere. Even though she had our group’s love, it wasn’t enough for her. Her jealousy drove her to go after Jasmine’s man and she got him but now it seems like she is working her way around all the men in Atlanta.

“Are you happy Amelia?” I asked.

“What do you mean am I happy? Am I happy with Kenneth? If that’s what you’re asking, yes I am extremely happy.”

“I guess that’s a part of what I mean. But what I really mean is, are you happy being the way that you are? If I lived your life, I would be miserable. You don’t have any real friends, and a man that you had to scavenge,” I said with genuine concern.

“I love my life. I have a wonderful career that you and your friends tried to ruin and I have a great man that loves me. I have it all, and I wouldn’t expect such harsh judgment coming from you. Aren’t you having sex with Kenneth’s best friend? Hi pot, it’s me kettle.”

I guess I can’t blame her for taking it there. She had a small point but what she and I did were two completely different things. I didn’t go behind anyone’s back or betray the trust of those that were closest to me. She was feeling backed into a corner so she was starting to grasp at anything that she could.

I smiled, “Come on now, you know that those two situations were completely different. You’re loose but you’re not stupid.”

“There goes that ghetto behavior again Nikki, it’s no wonder why Kenneth decided to upgrade. Did you really think he would ever marry a black girl? Get real!”

I was dumbstruck and realized I had to quickly remove myself from this situation before it got ugly.
